California Supreme Court Opinion

The Opinion in Full

thanks to legalmoose for providing the link

I love reading these things, because it gives me hope. For those who are living in the dark, the California Supreme Court has ruled that the state's domestic partnership vs. marriage practices constitute a discriminatory practice against same-sex couples, and that the definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman is also discriminatory.

Please take the time to read through the first 12 pages at least. It's a fascinating, if wonky, read. The remainder of the document goes into the details of the different cases which led to the decision, the constitutional issues, response to the plaintiffs in the case, response to the attorney general, scrutinizing the domestic partnership law, and the remediation needed to correct the inequity (extending marriage to everyone).

The funny thing is, I just wrote an article for If Journal about marriage rights and marriage rites. I think the issue has already gone to press, and it's already out of date.

How wonderful.

A Life Aflame

The last two days I've been attending the OCLC Engaging Teens conference in Arlington.

I feel ablaze.

Being with this group of people from our library system and seeing the nods of approval and the gung ho attitudes and spark of life in our eyes I can feel the tipping point coming. We're at a place where there's so much new blood and it's in so many different places and it's pushing against the old paradigm, and there's just enough force behind it that we're going to be doing some amazing things. We're talking about radical new approaches to library service. Breaking people out of their shells, tearing down the barriers that have kept us locked in our ivory towers, and totally transforming everything from the ground up.

There is so much passion in us right now. I'm just looking at everything going YES!

I can feel it's so close I can touch it.

This is exactly where I want to be.

Life, The Universe and Everything

Well, it seems that faeshale and I have started down that road of eternal conversations about life, ethics, religion, time and space, social norms, meaning and meaninglessness...

It's good. It makes me think about deep things again, but I feel like I've walked this road before. And I have. Each time is a bit different though. Each time things get refined and redefined. I look forward to continuing the conversation.

Post-Beltane Wrap-Up

DC Radical Faerie Beltane was a wonderful occasion this year. Our maypole was a motley assortment of all kinds of amazing colors and though it turned out a little kaplowy on top, the center part all the way down to the end wove up perfectly. It's a crazy beautiful thing.

And of course I'm like a shade away from sunstroke...

Cursed day star...

Anyways, the weekend was lovely. The bonfire was fun, even if the wood was smouldering on the fire. The maypole dance was excellent. And the little cluster of people going out for kabobs afterward was great.

Saturday night after the bonfire I went home and watched a ton of anime on adult swim. Hooray for an all anime saturday night again! It was glorious, and I even watched InuYasha twice! Sunday I bought a ton of anime at Best Buy with a tiny portion of my tax refund. I got the complete set of Noein, vol. 4 of Haruhi Suzumiya, and the movie Paprika.

So, tonight, I'm going to chill at home with my boyfriend, and a couple other folks and watch some Noein.

The 24th Day

Last night jcruisedirector and I watched some gay cinema (quel surprise). One was so insufferable (29th and Gay) that we turned it off 20 minutes into the movie. The second, was actually pretty good.

The 24th Day is a film adaptation of an AIDS play (again, quel surprise). One character kidnaps the other, because he believes him to be the man who gave him HIV, and holds him hostage while they wait for results. Dramatically speaking, it felt like a writer's workshop piece, and totally looked like one too. But it was fairly well written, even if the ending wasn't the slash and kill moment everything was setting it up to be. That would have at least been more interesting than the "I'll let you live with yourself and the damage you've caused" ending we got.

Overall rating: B-

Home Repair Morning

Last week I sent my landlord pictures of a pretty nasty roof leak. Today the repair guy shows up (sporting an intense Dali handlebar moustache) and 3 hours later he's all done, patched the roof, fixed the ceiling and painted everything. Pretty fantastic.

HIV Prevention Campaign from the Faeries

Tonight I spent hours with a group of faeries working up ideas for our HIV prevention campaign for Pride. We've got a great group of potentials, that we need to build up into a reality. Some of the messages are scary, some clever, some funny, some sexy, all are informative, and all are good. Now we refine and play around with images, we get our facts together, and then we go to press. It's going to be a really cool series of things. I can't wait to have them out there!

Sci-Friday Notes

Sarah Jane: Terrible music, but hooray for baby Slitheens! And Gorgons, they just made me think of this SMBC comic (slightly NSFW, compromising situations). That's all I could think about, really.

Doctor Who: Again, I say, Adipose look like Domo-kun. But I gotta say, I LOVE the sound of the space ship, that vibrating, deep, and high BRRRROOWWWMMMMMMmmmmm... It was a great start. But, oh I can't wait to see Pompeii on a larger screen.

Battlestar Galactica: I think we all collectively leapt in our seats when Baltar's invisible friend seemed a little bit more than a figment of his imagination. For several seasons we've been running on this assumption, that people are just hallucinating. But today we saw him literally picked up, like a puppet when he was physically failing. Can the final Cylon be some kind of metamorph that you only see once it's gotten inside you somehow? An invisible Cylon? I mean, in that last supper scene, there is that empty cup... I could only imagine that this would be some kind of deliberate move. Plus, it gets a LOT of people off the hook, like Adama, Roslyn, and others. This show keeps getting more and more awesome.

The Killing Joke

Batman: The Killing Joke
Written By Alan Moore, Art by Brian Bolland
DC Comics

I've never really been a fan of DC Comics outside of the Vertigo line, but Batman has always had an edge to it. Even still, I haven't read much Batman. But I have read a lot of Alan Moore. The man's a genius. So, it was my duty as a fan of the writer to read this classic story.

It was pretty good.

I think that it feels similar to The Watchmen in tone, in that he's exploring the origins and the psyche of the superhero and supervillain. It's good in that respect, but I felt it fell a bit short. Like it needed just a little bit more to flesh it out. It concluded too fast, and didn't go deep enough. I thought the violence was much higher than I expected, and that the ending was a little too pat. But I guess there's only so much one can do with a mainstream comic.

I can see why it's a classic though. The artwork on that comic is impeccable. The premise is great. I think it could have just gone a bit further.
